TL;DR

  • A family in the UK shares that they’ve all been locked out of their Google accounts following one teen’s erotic Gemini Live encounter.
  • Google initially banned only the offending account, but locked the parents and siblings out of theirs in the days to follow.
  • Google has a history of taking sweeping action in response to allegations of CSAM.

Update, April 1, 2026 (6:03 PM ET): Google has responded to Android Authority’s inquiry into these allegations, and has quite a few good points to raise about why this incident may not be what it seems like on face value.

Original article, April 1, 2026 (5:03 PM ET): Keeping all your digital eggs in one basket can be a dangerous move. Companies like Apple and Google make it incredibly tempting to host our entire online lives within their ecosystems — when you’ve got all your photos, all your emails, all your device tracking, and more, all in one place, the sort of tight integration that affords can be super convenient. But there’s a downside to going all-in like that, and should you ever find yourself on the wrong side of one of these companies’ terms of service, you could quickly end up locked out of your account. That’s what one family in the UK is going through right now, all thanks to a child’s very embarrassing Gemini encounter.

Going all-in with Google is very convenient, but also means you have more to lose if locked out

Google’s terms of service are both expansive in coverage and broadly worded, and there’s no shortage of potential ways your account might end up in the company’s crosshairs. Still, most of us manage to play things cool and not do anything so egregious as to attract negative attention. But there’s one all-too-easy way to get that spotlight pointed right at you, fast: Kids.

Any incident involving children has the potential to be incredibly sensitive, and we’ve absolutely heard horror stories in the past of Google locking people out of their accounts after misidentifying photos of children. There was one particularly high-profile case back in 2021 when The New York Times shared the story of Google flagging one family’s medical photos saved to the cloud as child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and locking things down as a consequence.

It’s always upsetting to hear these stories, but today’s is disturbing on an entirely different level. PCWorld points us to a report posted anonymously to Reddit’s UK Legal Advice sub, where a family found all five of their Google accounts banned due to their 14-year-old making a very foolish, very on-brand-for-a-14-year-old choice about interacting with an AI agent.

It only takes one mistake to ruin a whole family’s accounts

OpenAI may have axed its plans for a NSFW ChatGPT adult mode, but there are still plenty of very horny AI enthusiasts out there looking for a release. And armed with all the best decision-making skills a 14-year-old can conjure up, this family’s teen apparently decided to get sexually explicit with Gemini Live — including sharing his tablet’s camera with the chatbot.

The fallout wasn’t immediate, but it didn’t take look for Google to flag and subsequently ban the teen’s account — and that was just the start. Over the days to follow, Google reportedly banned every one of the Google accounts that had been connected to the tablet, including parents and siblings.

Utterly shut out from their digital lives, the family’s been scrambling to put the pieces back together, having to fall back on less-than-graceful solutions like having their bank send out an account reset code via physical snail mail. They claim that their pleas to Google have failed to result in any restoration of access, with the company citing the need to protect children. We’ve reached out to Google to see if it can share any statement on the matter.

Striking a delicate balance is harder than it sounds

There’s a whole, whole lot going on in this story, and that’s exactly what makes it as scary and compelling as it is. We might snicker a bit at the thought of a teen having a sexual encounter with Gemini, but this is exactly the sort of thing that curious, hormone-flooded minds are going to try. That just leaves us asking: What’s the appropriate response?

Zero tolerance is just a lazy policy that ignores the very real existence of context and nuance — yet at the same time, who wants to be accused of being perceived as “weak” on child abuse? Better parental controls are a start, but this family thought they had them enabled — they just weren’t aware of settings for Gemini. With incidents like this one seemingly only destined to increase in frequency, the need for robust protections that also give innocents a pathway out feels all the more critical.
