Firefox is reportedly shutting down its China operations and terminating services tied to local user accounts. On July 16, users circulated screenshots on social media of a pop-up notification titled “Important Announcement on the Closure of Beijing Firefox and the Termination of China Firefox Accounts.” The notice is no longer visible, and Firefox has not made an official statement. Firefox entered the Chinese market around 2004 via grassroots developer communities and later formalized its presence with a local entity, Beijing Firefox Information Technology Co., Ltd., in 2011. According to corporate data platform Aiqicha, the company had 19 employees in 2023 and has faced multiple enforcement actions since January 2025, totaling over RMB 36 million ($5 million). Firefox China runs a localized version firefox.com.cn with separate cloud storage for user accounts. If services are discontinued, synced data such as bookmarks and passwords may be affected. Users can still access the international version of Firefox via firefox.com. [iThome, in Chinese]
