Forget next day, Amazon is introducing much faster deliveries

Next-day delivery once felt like the gold standard of online shopping, but Amazon is now pushing that expectation even further with new 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options rolling out across the US.

This shift is not just about speed for the sake of it, but about turning Amazon into something closer to an on-demand service that competes directly with local stores and supermarkets, where faster delivery reduces the need to leave the house for everyday essentials as convenience begins to outweigh immediacy.

The new delivery options allow customers to order from a catalogue of more than 90,000 products, ranging from household essentials and over-the-counter medication to electronics, toys, and clothing.

Rather than browsing with a wait in mind, users can now shop with the expectation that items could arrive within hours, fundamentally changing how people think about online purchasing.

Amazon has integrated these faster delivery options directly into its existing shopping experience, adding dedicated filters and clear labels that highlight which items are eligible to arrive within one or three hours for easier browsing.

The service is already available in hundreds of cities for 1-hour delivery and over 2,000 locations for 3-hour delivery, with plans to expand coverage even further over time.

Speed is becoming Amazon’s biggest advantage

Behind the scenes, this move builds on Amazon’s existing Same-Day delivery infrastructure, using local fulfilment hubs and predictive inventory systems to position products closer to customers before they even order.

That approach allows Amazon to reduce delivery times without completely reinventing its logistics network by making it faster and more efficient through smarter distribution, while pricing reinforces this positioning: Prime members pay $9.99 for 1-hour delivery and $4.99 for 3-hour delivery, with higher fees for non-members.

In effect, this is less about offering another delivery option and more about redefining what “fast” means in online retail, where waiting even a day is starting to feel increasingly outdated.
