Former Conservative chancellor George Osborne has been appointed as head of countries by US giant OpenAI.

Known for overseeing the austerity programme during the premiership of David Cameron, Osborne has now taken the role of managing director and head of OpenAI for countries, a role based in London.

Osborne described the ChatGPT developer as the “most exciting and promising company in the world right now” and “exceptionally impressive leaders”.

His new role will see him responsible for an initiative to spread AI technology and infrastructure internationally.

“It is clear they are exceptionally impressive leaders and that they care very deeply about their mission to ensure the power of artificial intelligence is developed responsibly, and the benefits are felt by all,” Osborne said.

“That’s exactly what the OpenAI for Countries initiative intends to achieve, helping societies around the world share the opportunity this powerful technology brings.”

Osborne’s appointment follows OpenAI rival Anthropic hiring former chancellor and prime minister Rishi Sunak as an advisor in October.

Osborne’s previous work in the tech industry since leaving government in 2016 includes a stint as an advisor at the cryptoasset exchange giant Coinbase.

OpenAI in October announced it would be working closely with the British government on an initiative to support domestic data storage capabilities in the UK.
