Jade Leung, a former employee of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, has been appointed as the AI advisor to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Currently serving as the chief technology officer of the government-owned AI Security Institute, Leung will now report directly to Starmer, as well as Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, on AI policy.
Leung will continue her work at the AI Security Institute, formerly the AI Safety Institute, and will split her time between the group and Number 10.
Holding a PhD in AI governance from the University of Oxford, Leung has held numerous roles in AI policy.
She spent almost three years as head of research and partnerships at the Centre for the Governance of AI before joining Californian group OpenAI in 2021 as a governance and policy advisor.
Leung rose to the position of governance lead at OpenAI before joining the government organisation in October 2023.
The appointment of Leung comes months after the announcement that former AI advisor to the prime minister Matt Clifford would step back from his role.
“I’m delighted about this – a superb appointment (and a major upgrade on the last AI adviser…),” commented Clifford.
“Jade brings a tonne of experience in frontier labs, VC and government and will do an amazing job of ensuring the UK is an AI winner. Excellent news.”
The Entrepreneurs First founder was first brought on to support the prime minister on AI policy during the premiership of Rishi Sunak and was a key figure in the organisation of the AI Safety Summit and subsequent launch of the associated institute.
Clifford continue serving the prime minister following the formation of a Labour government in July 2024, leading the creation of the AI Opportunities Action Plan.
