FreeBSD 15.0 is working toward its stable release in early December. As part of reaching that major release, FreeBSD 15.0-RC3 released today as what may be the final release candidate before FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE.
There was expected to be a FreeBSD 15.0-RC4 milestone but due to release delays due to extra snapshots earlier in the cycle, FreeBSD 15.0-RC3 is currently set to be the last release candidate. If all goes well with that testing, FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE could be announced on 2 December.
As for FreeBSD 15.0-RC3, it now ships with OpenZFS 2.4.0-rc4 as the latest open-source ZFS file-system support.
While FreeBSD 15.0 had been aiming for a nice KDE desktop experience with hopes of adding it as an install option from their OS installer, FreeBSD 15.0-RC3 ended up dropping the KDE packages from being included on the main DVD ISO. Due to space constraints with trying to stay within 4.7GB for traditional DVD ISOs, the KDE packages were among the packages trimmed out of that ISO.
The FreeBSD 15.0-RC3 release highlights include:
“- The packages contained on the dvd1.iso image have been adjusted in an attempt to fit within the 4.7 GB limit of DVDs; in particular, KDE was removed.
– Fixes to the handling of nvme namespace change events.
– OpenZFS updated to 2.4.0-rc4.
– A fix to the handling of IICHID “RESET” commands.”
See today’s 15.0-RC3 announcement for all the details as we work toward FreeBSD 15.0 in early December.
