The FreeBSD project this morning published their quarterly status report that outlines all of the interesting OS improvements and other changes made during Q4’2024.
The newest FreeBSD status report is available that outlines hardware support improvements, fundamental OS initiatives, various sponsored projects, and more that these BSD developers have been tackling over the last quarter. Some of their Q4-2024 highlights include:
– FreeBSD Core is working on a policy around generative AI created code and documentation.
– Continued work on an AMD IOMMU driver being funded by the FreeBSD Foundation and AMD.
– Suspend and resume improvements to help modern AMD and Intel laptops, such as the Ryzen-powered Framework laptops. There is an initial focus on enhancing FreeBSD support for the Framework 13 with AMD Ryzen 7040 SoCs.
– Related to the prior AMD items, FreeBSD support for the Framework Laptop remains an ongoing effort.
– Alpha-Omega and the FreeBSD Foundation are jointly funding work to improve FreeBSD security.
– Efforts to improve FreeBSD laptop support/usability remain ongoing.
– Continued work on enhancing the WiFi/wireless driver support on FreeBSD.
– Improvements to the FreeBSD installer to allow repairing/updating existing installations and other features.
– Porting of FreeBSD to the PinePhone Pro is progressing with new driver support completed this past quarter.
– Ongoing work to update the GCC compiler default version from GCC 13 to GCC 14.
