A POPULAR Freeview box has been axed after five years on the market.

The discontinuation of the device comes as TV fans prepare for the next generation of free television.

A hybrid device, Humax Aura allowed viewers to record Freeview channels and stream apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Channel 5, YouTube and Disney+.

It also offered up to 1,000 hours of recording and 4K support.

At the time of its launch in 2020 it was seen as a game-changer with viewers increasingly splitting their time between traditional TV and streaming.

However, it has now reportedly vanished from most retailers across the UK while the company has also confirmed that production on the Aura has ended, reported Cord Busters.

The end of the Humax Aura comes as Freely, an increasingly popular way to watch telly for free, begins to make its mark.

Instead of requiring aerials or dishes, viewers use Freely to stream TV over the internet.

It debuted in 2024, and is the creation of Everyone TV, which is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5.

It is expected to eventually replace Freeview, although Freeview still exists for now.

You can use Freely to watch live telly as well as on-demand content.

And there’s a regular TV guide that lets you browse telly.

The catch is that not all TVs and streaming devices support Freely, so you’ll need to have the right model.
