Google has launched Gemini CLI, a new open-source AI agent designed to bring the power of its Gemini model directly to developers’ command line interfaces. The tool is built to enhance how developers write code, generate content, manage tasks, and conduct research, that too all without leaving the terminal. With this launch, Google is not just offering another AI chatbot, but also it’s reimagining the way software development and technical problem-solving can happen in real time.

Gemini CLI

While the tool shines when it comes to writing and debugging code, Google says Gemini CLI is built for much more than programming. Whether it’s drafting content, managing tasks, solving problems, or conducting research, this utility is designed to be a developer’s all-in-one AI-powered companion. Its lightweight setup ensures that it’s quick to install and easy to integrate into any development environment.

Powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro

Under the hood, Gemini CLI runs on Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro model, known for its robust reasoning skills and support for a massive 1 million token context window. This means developers can pass more data, longer code files, and larger documents into the model without losing context and hence making it especially useful for complex projects that require deep analysis or step-by-step execution.

Seamless Integration with Google’s Developer Ecosystem

Gemini CLI comes integrated with Gemini Code Assist, a tool that enhances coding with real-time suggestions. It also supports Google’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing the model to maintain relevant context across interactions. On top of that, it’s connected to Google Search and can generate visuals using Google’s powerful AI tools like Veo and Imagen. That gives developers a unique way to combine coding, research, and media creation within one terminal session.

Availability

Currently, developers can preview Gemini CLI for free by using a personal Google account to activate a Gemini Code Assist license. The offer includes a generous usage cap of up to 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 per day which Google claims is the largest free allowance available among AI developer tools. This makes Gemini CLI an appealing alternative to other platforms like GitHub Copilot, Microsoft’s AI inside Windows Terminal, or Claude from Anthropic.
