Fugakounext is the name of the project to design a next -generation supercomputer in Japan. The contract with the Japanese Institute for Research and Development Riken has been awarded to Fujitsu Limited covers the complete system, computer nodes and CPU components. The basic design phase is scheduled to end on February 27, 2026.

The rapid growth of generative AI and other technologies is promoting a greater demand for diverse computer resources and large scale for R&D. According to a report by the HPCI Steering Committee, created by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Mext) of Japan, the importance of “AI for science” is increasing, that is, the initiatives that combine AI with simulation technology, real -time data and automated experiments, which leads countries to give priority to advanced computer infrastructures.

Although Japan has Fugaku, seventh system by Power level of the top-500 of supercomputers and the number 1 of Asia, technology advances by leaps and bounds and those responsible believe necessary a necessary New and flexible platform that responds to these demands in constant evolution, allows you to maintain your leadership in science, technology and innovation and facilitate greater social and industrial advance. The HPCI program management committee has chosen Riken as the main entity responsible for the development of this platform, and Riken has chosen Fujitsu to design it.

Fugakounext, the answer

Fugakounext will take advantage of Fujitsu’s consolidated experience in supercomputing and incorporate advanced CPUs of the general use of Fujitsu-Monaka, currently in development, and will meet the changing needs of customers by allowing integration with GPUS and other accelerators.

Fujitsu-Monaka, based on 2 nanometers avant-garde technology, uses exclusive Fujitsu technologies, such as an optimized microarchitecture for advanced 3D packaging and the operation of ultrabajo voltage circuits. Its objective is to offer a High performance and energy efficiency In various next -generation computer applications, from peripheral computer science to data centers, while guaranteeing safety and ease of use.

The successor CPU of Fujitsu-Monaka, provisionally called «Fujitsu-Monaka-X», destined for Fugakounext, not only will he inherit and accelerate the assets of existing applications of Fugaku, but also incorporate acceleration capabilities of the latest generation processing to meet the growing demands of AI. This CPU is intended for a wide application in sectors that support society and industry, beyond its role in Fugakounext.

«We are very excited to be part of the Fugakunext project, which is called to revolutionize the scientific and technological panorama of Japan. Fujitsu is determined to create a system capable of dynamically satisfying the needs of customers, taking advantage of our invaluable experience with Fugaku and leading technologies. Through the creation of various alliances, we will provide the powerful computer infrastructure that society and industry need to succeed »explained Vivek Mahajan, corporate executive director, corporate vice president and technology director, responsible for the Fujitsu Limited Systems Platform
