Garmin has launched a new Google Maps app for select smartwatches, which is available to download for free.
The app, available through the Connect IQ Store, enhances the navigation capabilities of compatible models by providing turn-by-turn directions.
Users of compatible best Garmin watches, which include the Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive and fenix series, will be able to see upcoming turns on their wrist, rather than having to check their phone. Users of Wear OS and Apple Watch rivals will already be familiar with how this works.
The next three turns will be displayed on the watch screen, while haptic feedback will alert users to the next turn.
It’ll also allow users to track their workout at the same time, with metrics like distance and heart rate still being recorded. However, it won’t be possible to search for locations on the watch itself and set up navigation without an Android smartphone. It also won’t be possible to use the app offline, which is a shame for those going off the beaten track.
Nonetheless, it’ll make life easier for walkers, cyclists and runners who won’t have to keep checking their phones to see where they’re going.
Which Garmin watches are compatible?
Supported models include the Forerunner 165, 265, 570, 955, 965, 970; Venu 3/3S/X1; vivoactive 5 and 6; Fenix 7/8; Epix Gen 2/Pro; Enduro 2/3.
iPhone users are currently locked out of this feature altogether, at least for the time being.
To get started with the app you’ll need to download it from the Connect IQ Store. You’ll also need to ensure your Android device is paired with your watch. Then you’ll need to initiate navigation on your phone. The directions will then mirror on your smartwatch.
This is a significant step forward for Garmin and its mapping capabilities. It’s something users have requested for a while, and it’s great to see it arrive.
