Garmin has announced it is expanding its ECG app to customers in Switzerland and the United Kingdom, finally bringing a key smartwatch feature to more users.

The app, which works with a number of the best Garmin smartwatches, enables users to record their heart rhythm and check for any signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

Users can perform a 30 second ECG test on their wrist, see the results straight away and sync the readings to the Garmin Connect app for later access and sharing with their healthcare provider.

The feature, which is powered by the sensors on the back of the smartwatches, is the first Garmin smartwatch feature to be classified as a medical device in the two countries. We’ve already seen ECG support pop up on some of the best smartwatches around, including the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9.

Garmin says it’ll continue to add to the list as it gets regulatory approval in more regions and expect to see new watches hopefully come with the feature right from launch. The app was first launched in 2023 and is already available in 50 regions, including the United States, Singapore and Australia.

Which watches does it work on?

It’s available on models like the D2, Enduro 3, Epix Pro Gen 2, Fenix 7, Fenix 8, Quatix 7 Pro, Tactix 7, Tactix 8, Venu 2 Plus, Venu 3 and Venu 3S. Expect to see it on more watches over time.

Opinion

More features coming to more smartwatches in more regions is always great news, especially when it’s something as important as the ECG. It’ll be frustrating to some its taken so long, but I am happy it’s finally here.
