Sonic X Shadow Generations contains two games, a remaster of the 2011 Sonic Generations game, and a new expansion that features Shadow aptly called Shadow Generations. While the remaster is a straightforward port to modern platforms, the real meat in the expansion. It follows Shadow as he travels through time to face off against his arch-enemy Black Doom. It’s got some of the best platforming found in a 3D Sonic game in years, and Shadow can activate a new ability called “Chaos Control” that lets him slow down time. For such a fast-paced game, this ability to lower the speed complements it well.
If you’re looking for a more traditional 2D Sonic experience, check out Sonic Origins, for which hardware writer Zackery Cuevas awarded a “Good” rating. In our Sonic Origins review, he said, “Sonic’s beloved, 2D adventures return with a fresh coat of HD paint. However, this otherwise enjoyable collection of Genesis-era games is marred by a few technical issues.”
