Indian book publishers as well as their international extensions have filed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in New Delhi. The agenda of the lawsuit is to cease the access of ChatGPT on proprietary content. As of now, courts all over the world are getting claims from different authors, musicians, and even news outlets.
All these entities have accused OpenAI of using their original work to train ChatGPT. Reuters has been told by the New Delhi-based Federation of Indian Publishers that the organization has filed a case against the AI giant in New Delhi. The case was filed on behalf of federation members including Bloomsbury, Cambridge University Press, Pan Macmillan, S. Chand and Co, Rupa Publications, and Penguin Random House.
Pranav Gupta, the federation’s general secretary, has said that they have asked the court to restrict OpenAI from using their copyrighted content. He further said if the AI giant is not ready to do licensing with the publishers, then they are supposed to delete datasets that have been used in the AI training and give a proper explanation on how the use of the intellectual property until now will be compensated.
What lies ahead for OpenAI?
Currently, OpenAI has not shared any response based on the allegations and the lawsuit. Previously, a case was opened by ANI as well against ChatGPT. In response to the ANI case, OpenAI officials said that any order to delete the training data will lead to US legal obligations violation.
They further mentioned that the judges have no right to hear a copyright case against the AI firm as the servers are not located in the region where the case has been registered. However, the federation has said that the OpenAI services are here in India, and due to this, the activities also fall under Indian laws.
The concern over the use of data or we can abuse by ChatGPT is now new. It will be interesting to see how the legal bodies tackle the situation. That being said, we will keep you updated with any advancement in the matter.
