Gmail automatically sums up your emails, good news?

Google continues to integrate artificial intelligence into all its applications and services. This time, it is the Gmail mobile app that automatically generates email summaries without the need to ask. A small card appears at the top of long messages or well -stocked discussion threads, just to avoid rereading everything.

Not for everyone, and not immediately

Before, it was necessary to press the option “summarize this email” so that Gemini puts himself at work in a panel next door. Now, Gemini decides when a summary can be useful to you and posters it directly. The system presents important information in the form of fleas and is updated as new messages arrive in the conversation. It is rather practical when you follow an exchange with several and you do not want to lose the thread.

For the moment, this novelty only concerns Google Workspace customers, Google One AI Premium subscribers and those with Gemini Education modules. Deployment takes about two weeks and only works with English emails on mobile (iOS and Android). No date announced for conventional Gmail accounts or office computers.

Google still thought of those who don’t like to be chewed with work. These summary cards can be reduced, and they remain hidden in this discussion thread. Even better: if you often reduce them, Gmail will eventually understand and hide them by default in the next conversations.

The emails which are not entitled to these automatic summaries keep the old method: a small button to request a summary when you want, either directly in the email, or via Gemini in the side panel.

If it really disturbs, it is possible to cut everything but be careful: deactivate automatic summaries requires deactivating all the “intelligent” Gmail features. Exit priority notifications, package monitoring, Smart composes and Smart Reply. A little radical as a solution.

This novelty confirms if it needed Google’s will to push AI everywhere in its services. Summarizing texts is exactly the kind of task where IA excels and can really save time (watch out for shortcuts, however).

It remains to be seen if users will appreciate this unlined assistance or if some will find it invasive. Google bets that most of them will have a significant time saving, especially to manage these endless professional email chains. The bet seems reasonable, but as always with AI, it’s all about balance between help and intrusion.
