Google launched Wear OS 6 back in July 2025, debuting on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic and then making its way to Pixel Watches in October. The company then launched Wear OS 6.1 in December 2025. However, there’s some weirdness going on, as Google is now marking “Wear OS 6.1” as a new release in its developer documentation.

Further adding to the confusion, Google also notes some user-facing changes and new features with this release, and they are surprisingly different from 2025’s Wear OS 6.1 release:
- Location-based time zone detection:
- Devices running Wear OS 6.1 and higher can now automatically set their time zone based on their physical location. This helps the device’s time stay accurate as users travel between regions, even on devices without a network connection. Users can control this feature in Settings > Date & Time > Use location.
- Refined kids’ experiences: Wear OS 6.1 includes several improvements for supervised accounts and kids’ standalone watches:
- Kids graduation: When a user with a supervised account reaches the age of consent, they can “graduate” to a non-supervised account. This transitions the device to a standard Wear OS experience, removing parental controls and giving the user full access to device settings.
- Improved reauthentication support: If users’ credentials become invalidated, they can now re-validate their Google Account directly on their watch or through the companion app. This capability eliminates the need for a factory reset if the user changes their password or otherwise changes their account details after completing initial device setup.
The report notes that Wear OS 6.1 (with build BP4A.250916.026.E2) is not available on any smartwatch. However, Wear OS 6.1 from December 2025 is available across Pixel Watches. Comments on the original report note that build numbers have progressed to CP1A.260305.014.W2 on Pixel Watches, and the release includes the setting to use the location for the time zone.
It seems Google has mixed up some release notes on its website, which may be the source of the confusion, as the developer documentation does not properly acknowledge the December 2025 release in its changelog. We’ve reached out to the company for clarification and will update this article when we learn more.
