Google Labs has introduced Opal, an experimental no-code tool that enables users to create AI-powered mini-applications through natural language descriptions and a visual workflow editor. Currently in public beta and available only in the United States, Opal is designed to simplify the process of building AI applications without requiring programming skills.
Users can begin by describing the desired functionality of an application in plain language. Opal then translates these descriptions into a visual workflow comprising interconnected steps, each representing a specific task or operation. These steps can include user inputs, AI model calls, and outputs. The visual editor allows users to view and modify each step, providing control over the application’s logic without writing code.
The platform supports two modes of interaction: conversational and visual. In conversational mode, users can continue to describe changes in natural language, prompting Opal to update the workflow accordingly. In visual mode, users can directly manipulate the workflow by adding, removing, or adjusting steps using a drag-and-drop interface.
Once an application is developed, Opal provides a shareable link that allows others to access and use the mini-app with their own Google accounts. This feature facilitates collaboration and testing among users. Additionally, Opal includes a gallery of starter templates that users can employ as-is or customize to suit their specific needs.
Developers are curious about how Opal’s functionality compares to Microsoft’s recent offerings, such as Power Platform and Copilot Studio, suggesting a competitive landscape in no-code AI app development tools. AI Developer Karim Chaanine notes:
Interesting positioning against Microsoft’s recent moves. Opal feels like Google’s answer to Power Platform + Copilot Studio, with natural language app building and Gemini models underneath.
Meanwhile VC Nabeel Hyatt commented:
Interesting experiment in the AI apps workflow builder category, even if I’m pretty sure I never want to see another node-based graph in my life.
Opal aims to accelerate the prototyping of AI ideas and workflows, enabling users to demonstrate proofs of concept and build custom AI applications to enhance productivity. As an experimental product, Google Labs is seeking feedback from users to refine and improve the tool before a potential broader release.
