Grimes has shared a new song called ‘Artificial Angels’, which is written from the perspective of Artificial Intelligence. Check it out below.

The new track comes amid a huge ongoing debate about the use of AI, particularly in the creation of music, and follows on from other of Grimes’ songs that touch on the subject, including ‘I Wanna Be Software’.

With the new track, the artist introduces a heavy, electronic beat and begins to put forward the perspective of artificial intelligence in the lyrics.

,This is what it feels like to be hunted by something smarter than you,“sings an AI-impacted voice at the start.”I cannot die, I do no want, there is no revelation/ The only thing I covet is my own annihilation/ Inhalation, exhalation/ Power isn’t given, it is taken,

The title makes a nod to Grimes’ 2015 album ‘Art Angels’, and is co-produced by Grant Boutin and Vadakin. The new cover for the single is made by Grimes and consists of various internet memes made about her and her outlook on tech.

As highlighted by Consequence, Grimes has shared that the song is not made entirely using AI, but rather only integrates it in the voice heard at the start and end.

The artist also clarified that while it is an intricate topic, she is generally against AI being used to make music.

“I think it can be useful for some things but the apps mostly took the cool ai artifacts out if it and I’m not super interested in it to just make normal music,” Grimes wrote on X/Twitter.

“It’s only useful to me for novel/ experimental sound design were they to allow that aspect back. Or possibly for more efficient advanced things like bg noise removal etc… Or for jokes. Otherwise I fear it is a bit slop oriented at the moment which seems like the opposite of innovation to me. It def has the capacity to innovate tho.”

The only AI on the song is the voice at the beginning and the end. I am opposed to ai music in some forms. I think it can be useful for some things but the apps mostly took the cool AI artifacts out if it and I’m not super interested in it to just make normal music. It’s only…

Grimes shared another single called ‘idgaf’ back at the start of the year, and before then, her last new music as a solo artist was 2022’s ‘Shinigami Eyes’. Since then, the artist has worked with Magdalena Bay, Illangelo, Svedaliza, and more for collaborations, but hasn’t shared a full album since 2020’s ‘Miss Anthropocene’.

Grimes has spoken about AI numerous times before, and last year said that she thinks the use of it in music “will probably shape all minds going forward for the rest of time”.

While saying that she is generally against AI music, the artist has been one of the most prolific voices in the music industry advocating for AI in the past couple of years, and made over 200+ GrimesAI Records available for content creators to use on any platform. She also released software that mimicked her voice so people could use it in songs in 2023.

In December that year, she then lent her voice to an AI children’s toy called ‘Grok’, a plush toy that can talk.
