The widely-used GRUB bootloader is now being developed on FreeDesktop.org with a modern GitLab-based workflow.
GNU GRUB to now had been hosted by the GNU Savannah Git repository, but is now transitioning to FreeDesktop, org where moving forward will support a modern development workflow using merge requests.
GRUB developers noted in a commit updating the Git location from GNU Savannah to FreeDesktop.org:
“We are announcing the new place where the GRUB repository will be hosted and its corresponding mailing list. The repository at freedesktop would become soon the upstream repository, so new contributions will need to be done through merge-requests.
The decision to migrate to a more modern repository system (freedesktop is indeed a gitlab instance) is clear and based on several proposed options, freedesktop turned out to be the best option. More information about this migration is coming soon.”
The official GRUB development repository is now gitlab.freedesktop.org/gnu-grub/grub where now Git merge requests will be honored by this prominent open-source project in 2026.
