In April 2024, Apple updated its security information on its iPhone technical support area. Among other things, the charging of its phones is affected and, even if the advice remains usual and perhaps already known by many of our readers, it is always good to make a reminder; especially since not everyone is aware of everything.
Be careful with heat, blankets and pillows
This is one of the basic rules of battery use: avoid exposing them to heat as much as possible. This is especially true when the battery is charging, since it itself emits a lot of heat. Adding a “layer of heat” can damage it and even put you in danger.
As Apple says on its official support website, “prolonged contact with hot surfaces may cause discomfort or injury.” It is therefore strongly recommended not to stick the iPhone, the charging cable or even the power adapter to your skin while the phone is charging. It is therefore absolutely necessary to avoid sleeping very close to a smartphone that is charging, whether it is plugged into the mains or placed on a wireless charger.
Furthermore, Apple advises against placing a charging iPhone under a pillow or blanket or even under your own body, for obvious reasons of lack of ventilation. You should therefore always make sure to place your smartphone on a flat surface, away from the sun and any heat source, in a properly ventilated room. For example, do not place the iPhone in a car in direct sunlight, even if it is not charging, by the way.
Use undamaged “Made of iPhone” accessories
This may be obvious to some, but not to everyone. It is absolutely essential, for obvious safety reasons, not to use a bare cable (even slightly) and a faulty power adapter (that crackles, heats up too much or no longer has any physical protection) to charge your iPhone, or any other electrical or electronic device for that matter. By using these types of damaged accessories, you risk simply electrocuting yourself. Simply put, using damaged cables or chargers can cause fire, electrocution, injury or damage to the iPhone or other property.
Furthermore, even new, some accessories can be dangerous. This is the case for cables or adapters purchased on sites that are not recommended, or from unknown resellers. As far as possible, always prefer to use Apple products, or “Made for iPhone” manufactured by reputable companies (UGREEN, Belkin, Anker, Rhinoshield, etc.). These products are verified, comply with strict standards and ensure much higher reliability than products without brands and without traceability. Some of the brands mentioned also apply very attractive prices, the Price often being a deterrent to the purchase of a quality accessory.
Finally, Apple recommends not using a power adapter in these cases:
- The plug or pins of the power adapter are damaged.
- The charging cable is frayed or otherwise damaged.
- The AC adapter is exposed to excessive moisture, or liquid has entered it.
- The power adapter was dropped and its casing was damaged.
