The start of next year will mark a decisive end of the race for some French drivers. It is in fact from this moment that new regulations will come into force, intended to accelerate the ecological transition linked to the automobile industry. More concretely, and with the aim of improving air quality on and around the roads, certain cars will soon be banned from driving. A decision taken a long time ago, as part of the gradual abandonment of thermal vehicles by 2035, but which will not be without consequences.
Which vehicles are affected?
In addition to the deadline of 2035, from which gasoline and diesel vehicles can no longer be sold in Europe, the old continent has imposed a progressive roadmap to push drivers to abandon their thermal cars in favor of a more ecological solution. Thus, in France, it is a very short-term objective which is emerging from the start of next year: the ban on vehicles classified Crit’Air 3 in certain large cities. A regulation which promises to concern several thousand French motorists.
What is a low emission zone?
Inaugurated in 2021 in cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants, ZFEs, or Low Emission Zones, and Crit’Air stickers aim to reduce pollution around cities by limiting the circulation of thermal vehicles. They now continue to expand, expanding their presence to new metropolises.
Postponed, but finally adopted
Initially planned for July 2024, this measure was postponed until January 2025. It is now time to take the bull by the horns, by adopting the regulations once and for all. Thus, new cities will soon adopt ZFEs, like Marseille, Strasbourg or Rouen. In certain metropolitan areas, non-compliant vehicles will be prohibited from driving from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except Sundays and public holidays. In Lyon and Strasbourg, the restrictions will be even more severe, with permanent traffic ban7 days a week and 24 hours a day.
Concretely, gasoline vehicles registered before 2006, as well as diesel models entered into circulation before 2011, will no longer have the right to circulate in ZFEs during the relevant time slots. Note that cars classified Crit’Air 4 before 2006 have already been banned since January 2024, while non-classified vehicles and Crit’Air 5, before 2001, have been banned since 2023.
