Valve is shaking up a home console market that was slowly starting to hum in favor of the PS5 (the case of Nintendo being a little special). The Steam Machine, just revealed, is a small cube measuring 152 X 162 x 156 mm that allows you to play Steam games on the family TV – or on a gaming monitor, it’s up to you.

Microsoft in sweat
Unsurprisingly, the device works with SteamOS, which opens up almost all of the games in the store, from indie titles to AAA blockbusters. And when we see the (relative) ease with which the Steam Deck runs these games, we can say that Valve has already won part of its bet. Not forgetting the “console” interface that is much easier to manage than Windows, and even the Xbox app for ROG Xbox Ally.
Under the hood, the Steam Machine is nothing revolutionary. The processor is a “partially custom” AMD Zen 4 clocked at 4.8 GHz (30W), the graphics part being provided by an AMD RDNA3 chip, again custom, equipped with 28 calculation units, but with a thermal envelope of 110W. Since the console does not have the same physical and thermal constraints of the Steam Deck, it can not only accommodate more powerful components, but also extract more juice.
Result: Valve promises performance up to 6 times higher than that of the portable console. The device also includes 16 GB of RAM and 8 GB of VRAM. In terms of connectivity, you can connect a 4K screen at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz via DisplayPort, or a 4K TV at 120 Hz with HDMI 2.0. There are also four USB-A ports and one USB-C port, as well as a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Two models are planned: 512 GB or 1 TB, with the same technical characteristics. Valve announces a launch for next year, but unfortunately without giving the Price. Fingers crossed for a price close to current consoles (around €500 or €600), but given the economic situation, it’s difficult to say.
At the same time, Valve also unveiled a brand new controller, the Steam Controller which uses the two touchpads of the Steam Deck and the four paddles on the back. We can connect the device at 2.4 GHz with an adapter (integrated into the Steam Machine) to reduce latency. It will also be possible to connect it via Bluetooth.
And wait, that’s not all! Valve also introduced the successor to the Valve Index, the Steam Frame. This standalone VR headset works with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 16 GB of RAM, all under SteamOS. No prices either.
