Here’s our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold — and everything we can figure out from it

We know that the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold is coming, but Samsung has been very coy about what to expect from the phone. Heck, aside from seeing various concept devices on display, we haven’t even seen what the phone will look like. Until now, anyway, thanks to a series of leaks.

The first glimpse comes from leaker Ice Universe, who has posted what seems to be the upcoming foldable in two configurations: the full-triple-screen display and the folded version of the phone.

I’ll admit, it took me a while to figure out what I was looking at, thanks to the phone’s perspective and the display it’s sitting on.

Korean news outlet Dailian also published what appear to be images of the same phone, while Android Authority features a video of the same display that has a watermark from an unknown Weibo account. That video is pretty crucial, since it features an animation with more details about the phone’s design — including how it unfolds.

The static display doesn’t really make that clear, but the animation reveals that the whole tri-fold display unfolds from the middle panel. This has a few different implications for the phone itself.

The first is that you likely won’t be able to use the internal display unless it’s fully unfolded, since there would be a piece of the phone in the way. So it’s an all-or-nothing situation, which might not have been the case if Samsung had mimicked the design of the Huawei Mate XT.

The second is that the cover display will always be in the center of the phone. So if you want to use that secondary display while the Tri-Fold is fully open, it should be directly in front of you — saving you the hassle of worrying about viewing angles. However, this also means that the main cameras, which we don’t see in this display, will be situated to one side. It’s not the biggest problem in the world, but it is something you’ll have to think about when taking photos.

Final thoughts

Personally, I don’t really know what to make of the phone. The design is kinda cool, I guess, but I just know that it’s going to come with an astronomical price tag — and potentially a limited release. Aside from gaining some bragging rights, I’m still not sure why Samsung is making this phone.

But word is that the phone could launch within the next few days, and the fact that there’s some kind of official-looking display out there suggests that Samsung is gearing up to do something quite soon.

So hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer to find out about what the Tri-Fold, or G-Fold as it has been rumored to be called, has to offer.
