How do we address public concerns over facial recognition? – UKTN

Earlier this year, it was reported that up to 51,000 faces were scanned in a single day by live facial recognition cameras near London Underground stations.

The Metropolitan Police described the initiative as an important step in public safety. Many Londoners, however, saw it differently – it shone a light on the concerns that some people have around the proliferation of facial recognition technology (FRT).

More recently, the Home Office pledged to increase the use of FRT by the police. Just days later, the ICO blasted the police for historical bias in algorithms associated with FRT used by forces across the UK.
