In response to heightened security concerns in the early 2000s, public venues, border crossings, and airports adopted more stringent screening measures. While several incidents contributed to these changes in the security industry, the events of September 11, 2001, were a major catalyst. As public spaces implemented far more rigorous and methodical security measures, greater questions arose about how to best move people through security checkpoints efficiently while still effectively verifying everyone’s safety.
To help answer this, computed tomography (CT) scanners were implemented at many locations. CT scanners are medical tools that digitize Xray data and use it to produce detailed images of the body. AIintegrated screening
While earlier iterations of CT scanners retrofitted an established medical tool for new security purposes, ScanTech AI’s CT scanners were built specifically with security process enhancement in mind. The addition of machine learning to the system furthers this aim with the hopes of increasing security screening accuracy while reducing the time these processes take.
Industry partnerships and certifications
ScanTech AI has partnered with several institutions and regulatory bodies, including collaborations with several national laboratories, such as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Department of Homeland Security’s Science & Technology Directorate.
The company has also acquired TSA Tier 2 Explosive Detection certification and Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) certification.
Recent developments
ScanTech AI recently secured a contract to provide CT screening systems to a North American power producer’s nuclear infrastructure security. The company also completed a business combination with Mars Acquisition Corp. and is now listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “STAI.”
The company has also partnered with the Virginia Department of Corrections to pilot its contraband detection system for inmate mail screening. In addition, it has established research and development collaborations with institutions such as the Georgia Institute of Technology.

By developing CT scanning systems for security applications, the company aims to improve detection capabilities and operational efficiency by potentially reducing maintenance costs and enabling faster, more accurate detection of explosives, weapons, drugs, cash, and other contraband at airports, border checkpoints, public venues, and correctional facilities.
