Sony has announced the latest in its long-running series of WH-1000X headphones in the WH-1000XM6, and if you’re looking to purchase them, we’ll explain how to pair the headphones to your device of choice.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 support Bluetooth, so they’ll be able to connect to other devices that support Bluetooth as well, and they also come with a few other features that make for a speedy connection to other devices.

So, if you find tech a little intimidating, here’s how to pair the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones; whether you’re connecting to one of the best smartphones, best tablets or best laptops.

What you’ll need:

  • Sony WH-1000XM6
  • Mobile device that supports Bluetooth

The Short Version:

  • Press the power button on the WH-1000XM6
  • Head to the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone
  • Select the WH-1000XM6 headphones
  1. Step 1.

    Power up the WH-1000XM6

If this is the first time you’ve powered up the headphones (or you’re looking to connect to another device); the process is similar.

Upon pairing for the first time, press the power button on the left earcup and the headphones will go into pairing mode straight away. If they’ve been paired with another device previously, press and hold the power button until you see it flash multiple times and then it’ll be in pairing mode.

  2. Step 2.

Find the Bluetooth settings on your mobile device

Whether you’re looking to pair it with a smartphone tablet, or other mobile device; you need to head to the settings of that device and scroll down the list of ‘Available devices’.

  3. Step 3.

    Select the WH-1000XM6 headphones

The WH-1000XM6 headphones should be there on the list. If you don’t see it at first, it might take a while to appear; and if it doesn’t then press the refresh button so your mobile device searches for it again.

Once you’ve found it, select it and usually you’ll be asked if you want to give headphones access to call logs and contacts. If you do, tap the tick box and press tap where it says ‘Pair’.

  4. Step 4.

    Make sure they’ve connected

You’ll know the headphones are connected when you see another battery icon at the top of the screen that represents the headphones. You can also dive into the Sony Audio Connect app to see the settings.

If you’re using a laptop, you’ll see it at the bottom of the screen where the speaker icon is.

Can I connect with Google Fast Pair?

The Sony WH-1000XM6 support Google Fast Pair, so on the first pair with Android devices, power the headphones up and a screen will appear on your Android device asking to connect. Press connect and the headphones will automatically establish a Bluetooth connection.

Once that’s done, you’ll be asked if you want to save it as one of your devices (which will make it easier to pair with other Android devices instantly), whether you want to add it to your ‘Find My’ list (to locate them if they’re lost) and whether you want to set the headphones up in the supported app.Sony WH-1000XM6 Google Fast Pair request

Does the WH-1000XM6 support Windows Fast Pair?

Yes they do and like with Google Fast Pair, if you’re near a Windows device, the option to connect the headphones will pop up on the screen in the bottom right corner.
