One reason why last week’s 1st Test in Perth held such significance for England was because their record at the Gabba is so poor. They failed to get a much needed foothold in the series, and come to Brisbane in an unenviable position.
You have to go back to the days of Ian Botham and captain Mike Gatting (1986, to be precise) since England managed to win at the Brisbane Cricket Ground fortress — more commonly known by its nickname of the ‘Gabbatoir’, such are the cricketing massacres that tend to take place here at the cost of the touring team.
The absence of captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood didn’t seem to hamstring Australia too much in Perth, and Mitchell Starc will inevitably lead the successful seam attack of Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett again. The biggest headache Australia have to cure is at the top of the order after Usman Khawaja pulled out a few days before the 2nd Test. It seems like the obvious move to put Travis Head back as opener after his heroics in Perth, with Josh Inglis and Beau Webster vying for a spot down the batting line-up.
As is their habit, England named their XI a few days ahead of the Thursday start. Resisting the urge for wholesale changes after the humbling 1st Test defeat, the only change comes at the cost of the injured Mark Wood. Rather than go for a replacement fast bowler, they’ve opted for Surrey all-rounder Will Jacks. It’s a wildcard pick that’s typical of the Bazball era. If it pays off, it will look like a stroke of genius. And if it doesn’t, England will be staring down the barrel of being 2-0 down with three to play…
