It’s a small event for Ghibli fans, and we know how many there are. For the very first time in France, 11 films from the legendary Japanese animation studio will be available free, legally and in streaming on all platforms. We must thank France Télévisions for this wonderful gift. A rare initiative in an audiovisual landscape where the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata are usually reserved for paid platforms. This new free window therefore comes at the right time for all those who wish to discover or rewatch these classics at no additional cost.
An event broadcast from December 6
France Télévisions announced the news on November 18 on Bluesky. From the December 6two Ghibli films will be posted online each week on France.tv, in addition to being broadcast on its channels. In total, 11 films will be offeredincluding several pillars of world animation of which here is the complete list:
- Kiki the little witch
- Porco Rosso
- My Neighbor Totoro
- The wind rises
- Healing
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- The Boy and the Heron
- Princess Mononoke
- The Castle in the Sky
- Spirited Away
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
This line-up covers almost the entire career of Miyazaki, while leaving room for the studio’s most recent film, The Boy and the Heron. The precise broadcast schedule has not yet been communicated, but it should be communicated as close as possible to the event. In any case, the films will remain available for catch-up on France.tv, which will allow viewing to be spread out smoothly throughout the month of December. But be careful, they will not be available indefinitely.
Among those absent, we note that many of them deal with harder subjects and less adapted to the family period that is the end of year celebrations. But who knows, France Télévisions will perhaps come back at the start of next year with a few additional nuggets, a little more adult.
What if you already subscribe to Netflix?
Until now, the easiest way to see the entire catalog was a subscription to Netflixwhich hosts almost all of the studio’s feature films. Good news, all Ghibli films remain available on the platformwhich retains streaming rights for almost the entire catalog. Those who already pay for a subscription will therefore not lose anything with this new offer. Above all, France TV allows you to reach a new audience, or to rewatch certain classics without going through a paid platform.
