Huawei AI chip possibly made by TSMC, triggering US export control investigation: report · TechNode

Huawei’s most advanced AI accelerator chip, the Ascend 910B, may have been manufactured by TSMC, a source familiar with the matter has disclosed to Reuters, after the tech research platform TechInsights took apart the product. If TSMC is found to have been involved, it may have breached US export controls, with its possible involvement prompting the US Department of Commerce to initiate an investigation into the issue. Due to US sanctions on Huawei, TSMC has been prohibited from manufacturing chips for the Chinese tech giant since September 2020. In a statement on Monday, TSMC announced that it had proactively contacted the US Department of Commerce regarding the matter. “We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time,” the company said. TechInsights, which has not yet published its report, declined to comment. [Reuters]
