After causing a sensation in China by unveiling the first smartphone that folds in three, Huawei is continuing its journey in the tablet segment. The Chinese giant is renewing its range by presenting the MatePad Pro 12.2 inches and MatePad 12 X, two high-end tablets to compete with Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi.
The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 inches is the latest high-end tablet from the manufacturer. The manufacturer wants to open “a new era for creation” with a model that naturally targets the iPad Pro. The MatePad Pro 12.2 inches first relies on a Tandem OLED PaperMatte screen (2,800 x 1,840 pixels) whose brightness climbs to 2,000 nits. The refresh rate climbs to 144 Hz.
Same screen technology as iPad Pro M4
Huawei ensures a high-flying visual experience, whether under strong outdoor light or indoors. Star of the year in premium tablets, this Tandem OLED technology stands out by the use of two superimposed RGB OLED layers. We have already been able to see it in the new iPad Pro M4, as well as in certain laptops (XPS 13 2024) or smartphones (PORSCHE DESIGN HONOR Magic6 RSR).
The panel promises a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 in HDR, benefiting from anti-glare and anti-reflection engraving at the nanometer scale. Magnetron optical layers are also present to cancel the effects of light interference, sparkle and glare. As is often the case with Huawei, the display arrives with a slew of certifications focused on visual comfort: SGS Low Visual Fatigue 2.0 Premium Performance, TÜV Rheinland Reflection-Free and TÜV Rheinland Full Care Display 3.0.
In addition to the screen, Huawei focuses on the design and more particularly on the thinness of its latest tablet. The MatePad Pro 12.2 inches is limited to 508 grams on the scale despite its format, as well as a thickness of 5.5 mm. It arrives in a Golden Silk finish whose surface was obtained thanks to the silk weaving technique and multiple optical layers, Huawei specifies. Visually, this offers a hypnotic effect that should not really go unnoticed. The manufacturer adds a black version, more classic and discreet, which it considers more suitable for professionals.
MatePad Pro 12.2 inches: a premium tablet
This high-end tablet comes with a 2-in-1 keyboard called the Glide Keyboard. It has a storage for the stylus, which allows you to charge and protect the pen at the same time. Huawei mentions the possibility of opening and closing the keyboard in a single operation, as you can do with a laptop. Finally, the keyboard claims anti-smudge properties.
On the technical side, the technical sheet mentions the presence of 12 GB of RAM and 256 to 512 GB of storage. The tablet has three photo sensors, including a 16 Mpx front camera (f / 2.2). On the back, there is a main sensor (wide-angle) of 13 Mpx with an aperture f / 1.8 and an ultra wide-angle of 8 Mpx (f / 2.2). Huawei mentions the presence of four speakers and four microphones, but is discreet about the nature of the chip. Presented in China, the MatePad Pro 12.2 inches sported a “home” Kirin 9010W SoC. It powers the HarmonyOS 4.2 operating system of the Chinese manufacturer. Finally, the tablet supports wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
In terms of user experience, the GoPaint app is still present. It brings multiple digital creation tools, such as new “Splatter” brushes and “Fluid” brushes. As for the “Splatter” brushes, they allow users to create ink splatters by placing their stylus about 12 mm above the tablet screen and double-tapping the stylus.
Finally, the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2-inch supports Huawei SuperCharge at 100W to recharge its 10,100mAh battery. A charge from 0 to 100% is completed in 55 minutes while the Smart Power Conserve function allows the tablet to remain in standby for up to 380 days.
Huawei MatePad 12 X: more mainstream, still creative
More affordable, the MatePad 12 X is nonetheless a smart slate with a neat look. Huawei wants to appeal to a younger audience with this tablet featuring a pearlescent or “Metallic White” finish. With its 555 g and a thickness of 5.9 mm, the MatePad 12 X knows how to be discreet and Huawei adds a 12-inch PaperMatte LCD screen (2,800 x 1,840 pixels) with anti-reflective engraving technology. This panel is designed to simulate the texture of paper, improving the writing experience by 47% compared to traditional tablets. The display is also very bright, with a peak of 2,000 nits. There is also a refresh rate of 144 Hz.
On this model, the brand puts creativity in the spotlight with its Notes application. It integrates functions such as Note Replay, which integrates real-time audio synchronization with your notes, or Multi-Note and the One-Touch Split Screen function. The tablet also includes GoPaint and its 150 types of “professional” brushes.
Under the hood, the Kirin 9010W seems to be part of it and the “home” processor powers AI functions. It relies on 8 to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The photo part is the same as on the MatePad Pro while the audio part includes six speakers and two microphones.
