Huawei will launch its Pura 80 series smartphones this Wednesday, featuring a new dual focal-length periscope lens. The innovative design uses a folded optical structure and moving parts to switch between two distinct optical focal lengths. According to tech blogger Digital Chat Station, the switch between focal lengths is not seamless, as software is used to bridge the gap. Huawei is also testing true continuous optical zoom, which is not yet ready. Compared with traditional zoom systems, continuous optical zoom offers more consistent image quality, color accuracy and white balance, as it uses a single lens system for all magnifications. Major Chinese brands such as Oppo and Vivo are also exploring this next-generation zoom technology. [My Drivers, in Chinese]
