It was none other than global sensation Ed Sheeran, 34, who popped up to perform an impromptu gig on the New York subway.

Over his esteemed career, he has won four Grammys, seven BRIT Awards, two AMAs (American Music Awards), and eight Billboard Music Awards.

But proving that no audience is too meagre, he treated fans to a free show as he returned to his busking roots.

An account on X – formerly known as Twitter – posted a video of the pop icon which has since gone viral.

Ed was happily strumming his guitar for a special acoustic duet performance of Chappell Roan’s smash-hit Pink Pony Club.

He covered up in a black hoodie and large black sunglasses as he went back to his busking roots.

In the clip, his famous ginger locks were completely hidden underneath a black wig.

He finished off his ’emo’ look with black cargo trousers and a grey beanie hat on top of a jet-black wig.

The caption from the account read: “Ed Sheeran disguised as an emo boy singing Chappell Roan in the subway they really did this for me.”

Despite the incognito disguise, his signature tones and unmistakable talent completely shone through.

He had the audience singing along to the UK number one single as he smiled along with the track.

However, another video of the performance was later posted onto the microblogging platform.

The Castle On the hill hitmaker later removed his disguise to show his full face as the delight at pulling of the prank was there to see.

The fan account speculated that a new album could be on the way as they thought this was a promotional tool.

Posting the reveal video, they added: “Azizam in the nyc subway !!! new Ed Sheeran album imminent he’s popping up in random places again.”

However, many have noticed that the other performer looks remarkably like Jimmy Fallon as they maybe filming a segment for his talk show.

In August 2024, the “Shape of You” star appeared at a burger van in a Sainsbury’s car park in London Colney, Hertfordshire.
