By now you’d have heard that the award-winning Disney+ app has had some redecoration. Star, which was home to 20th Century Studios and more mature content on the service in the UK has been rebranded as Hulu.

Now the the six ‘worlds’ or brands available on the Disney+ UK platform is Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic, and Hulu.

In the US, Disney+ and Hulu remain separate apps; but in 2026 those two apps will be combined.

The question you’re probably asking yourself is, has anything on the service actually changed aside from Star transforming into Hulu? Let’s find out and see.

What’s new with Hulu in the UK?

According to Disney, nothing has changed with the inclusion of the Hulu brand in the UK.

You’ve not lost any shows in the transition, they’ll just be under a new banner; so you’ll still have access to the likes of High Potential, Only Murders in the Building, Alien: Earth, A Thousand Blows, Rivals, Flintoff, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and others. They’ll just be under the Hulu banner and you’ll see titles with the green Hulu branding going forwards.

What about parental controls on Hulu UK?

Given that Hulu is home to more mature content, you might not want your kids stumbling upon what’s available in that section. In that regard, Disney+ has a few things that can help.

For one, parents can set “access limits on mature content” and create PIN-protected profiles, which in laymans’ terms means that in order to access Hulu, someone will need to enter a PIN created by you.

There’s also Junior Mode profiles that essentially remove all access to any mature content that’s available on the service.

Is Hulu UK identical to Hulu US?

Here’s where things might get interesting. Or confusing. Or both.

Hulu in the US is a separate app in the US from Disney+, and doesn’t natively support Dolby Atmos with the platform designed to support audio up to 5.1.

Of course, with titles available on Hulu and Disney+ Star, that meant that even though Disney+ in the UK wasn’t under the same restrictions as the Hulu was in the US, we were all stuck with 5.1 audio. TV series such as Only Murders in the Building, Shogun and Chad Powers don’t have any immersive audio support.

However, titles that are branded as Hulu in the UK, such as A Thousand Blows, that do support Dolby Atmos. But A Thousand Blows isn’t available on the Hulu US app, it’s actually available on the Disney+ US app.

Confused? So are we. US subscribers should have more clarity when the two apps merge next year, and we suspect it’ll look the same as the UK version does now. Here’s hoping Hulu titles will receive an immersive Atmos upgrade in the near future.
