Hyundai and Samsung are teaming up to create an open ecosystem connecting vehicles with smart home devices and phones.
Hyundai Motor Group’s Kia and Hyundai Motor brands recently signed a strategic technology partnership at Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus. The partnership will concentrate on preparing for the software-developed vehicles (SDVs) era.
Hyundai and Kia aim to offer various in-vehicle services to its customers through Samsung technology. On the other hand, Samsung aims to connect its smart home devices and smartphones with Hyundai and Kia cars.
Hyundai/Kia features coming to Samsung Devices
Hyundai Motor and Kia’s next-generation infotainment system will be connected to Samsung’s global ‘SmartThings’ platform, opening up a few features to drivers. Hyundai Motor Group’s 42dot software subsidiary will work with Samsung on its next-gen infotainment system.
“Our goal is to enrich Hyundai Motor and Kia customers’ mobility experience by offering personalized services that extend beyond transportation, seamlessly integrating vehicles with smartphones,” said Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division.
One of the first features of Hyundai and Kia’s new infotainment system is the global location solution function. The new feature will allow drivers to locate their vehicles through Galaxy phones from anywhere in the world. Galaxy owners can also access a Quick Panel on their phones to control the air conditioning or check the range of their Hyundai/Kia vehicles.
Samsung features coming to Hyundai/Kia Vehicles
Conversely, Hyundai and Kia drivers will be able to control devices on Samsung’s SmartThings platform from their vehicles. Drivers will be able to optimize conditions in their homes by controlling Samsung air conditioners, air purifiers, and other smart home devices from their Hyundai or Kia cars.
Samsung plans to expand the use of SmartThings by introducing in-vehicle health monitoring through Galaxy devices and wearables. It also plans to roll out pet care solutions and smart apartment devices that could be linked to SDVs and smartphones.
