When it comes to buying an action camera, the best deal is usually on last year’s model. Action cams are one of the few pieces of camera gear that are still on an annual update cycle, so improvements from generation to generation are more gradual than dramatic. So even though the GoPro Hero13 Black ($329) and the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro ($349) are newer, the DJI Osmo Action 4 Pro is the way to go if you’re shopping for value. It’s marked down to $199 for Amazon Prime Day. It’s a heck of a good camera in its own right, and it keeps up with the latest models for fewer dollars.

The Osmo Action 4 is an adventure-ready camera. It is built to survive drops and can go down to 59 feet underwater, so it’s a good pick for snorkeling and most recreational scuba diving. It records 4K video at up to 120fps, so you can add slow-motion and speed ramping effects to clips and still see fluid motion. A magnetic mounting system keeps it in place for helmet, surfboard, or on-vehicle mounting, and its digital stabilization smooths out bumps and makes handheld recording possible.
I like the Osmo for travel and vlogging too. The camera works well with a selfie stick and includes a color touch screen on the front so you can monitor your footage. Its battery is good for about 80 minutes of 4K recording per charge, and it pairs easily with the DJI Mic Mini for vlogs that sound as good as they look. Out-of-camera color is solid, and expert-level editors can switch to a 10-bit D-Log profile that better handles color correction.
So what are you missing versus spending more on a newer camera? The GoPro Hero13 Black has more resolution (5.3K60) and works with add-on lenses (sold separately), but is otherwise pretty similar, and also gets about 80 minutes of 4K60 recording time per charge. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro matches the Osmo 4 with 4K120 video, but extends record time to around two hours of 4K60.
So while the Osmo Action 4 may not be the latest and greatest, it’s competitive with fresher options and a bargain for around $200. That’s an even better price than the $250 it was at when I selected it for the PCMag Top 100 Best Budget Buys last month.
