Iberdrola joins Echelon Data Centers to build data centers in Spain

Iberdrola joins Echelon Data Centers to build data centers in Spain

Iberdrola has created a joint company with Echelon Data Centersfocused on development and construction of large-scale data centers in Spain. It is about Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infrawhich plans to invest more than 2,000 million euros in this type of facilities.

The creation of this joint venture was announced last July, and it already has the necessary regulatory approvals to get started. The target of Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infra will be hyperscale technology companies, as well as infrastructure and service providers for AI, due to their great growth potential.

The first project on which both companies will work through Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infra will be Madrid Sur, a 160,000 square meter complex with 144 Megawatts for data processing, and which already has an electrical connection of 230 Megawatts secured.

This project will generate around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, as confirmed by both parties, and its estimated demand is one terawatt per hour. In addition, it will have a photovoltaic solar plant and additional renewable energy from Iberdrola to guarantee all its electrical consumption.

Iberdrola will contribute to the joint venture its experience in renewable energy generation, as well as in the development and management of large electrical infrastructures. Its mission will also be to identify and secure land that has good connectivity to the electrical grid, in addition to guaranteeing a 24/7 supply of clean energy to the facilities. Echelon, for its part, will be in charge of assuming the permitting, design, marketing and operation processes.

The majority stake in the joint venture will be Echelon, which will hold 80% of the company, while Iber27drola will own the remaining 20%. So far, Iberdrola has already secured more than 700 Megawatts in electrical connections in strategic areas located near Madrid.

In addition to this initial project, Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infra plans to undertake new projectswhose investment could reach 6,000 million of euros. And Iberdrola, which already markets more than 11 Terawatts per hour to technology companies and data center operators around the world, reinforces its position as an energy partner for data centers.
