Since May 2025, Grok’s image functionality, called “Imagine”, has been massively misused to create deepfakes, sometimes humorous, sometimes engaging, often problematic. Because that is the whole difference between Elon Musk’s AI and the competition: where the rest of the image generators are often singled out for being too prudish, quick to censor the slightest request deemed too suggestive, Grok’s AI claims total “freedom”, including when it comes to damaging a person’s image.

Although the trend is not new, it has intensified in recent days. Prompts like “remove clothes” or “put her in lingerie” transform selfies into erotic content, without the consent of the people involved – most often women and minors. It only takes a quick tour of the platform to be convinced: several thousand deepfake content with pornographic or erotic tendencies circulate with complete impunity on X, which remains deaf to requests for moderation.

An illegal practice in France

Beyond the ethical aspect, let us first remember that the practice is completely illegal in France. According to article 226-8-1 of the Penal Code carried by the SREN law, deepfakes of a sexual nature are prohibited, even if it is explicitly specified that it is an image generated by AI, the latter being likely to undermine the integrity of the persons concerned. On this point, the law is clear: “Such hyperfaking is punishable by a prison sentence of two years and a fine of €60,0000.“.

The fact remains that in France as elsewhere, it is very difficult to assert your rights, especially when the platform in question belongs to Elon Musk. On the social network, a content creator saw one of her photos hijacked. Undressed without her consent, an Internet user then asked Grok to add a tattoo of Adolf Hitler sucked on his stomach, which the AI hastened to do, without further questions.

It must be said that where the first image generators struggled to create an illusion, Grok excels in realism: it clones faces and backgrounds without any watermark, and tolerates NSFW. Only complete nudity is prohibited. And as AI often works on the principle of the snake biting its tail, xIA is mainly used to create naked women, which improves the quality of its content as the prompts progress.

What do X and Elon Musk risk?

On paper, it’s illegal. In Europe, the GDPR could decide to punish X up to 4% of its turnover. In practice, Internet users are rarely (if ever) worried. xAI promised “reinforced security” at the end of 2025, and if Grok admits the abuses in his responses, his community moderation solutions remain ineffective given the scale of the phenomenon.
