Less than 4 months ago, the Chinese company Mingyang announced the launch of the largest offshore wind turbine in the world with a capacity of 20 MW and resistant to typhoons. However, the reality has been different: breakage in two wings.
In short. The company has confirmed the fracture in the blades of a developed prototype that Mingyang has in the testing phase in Lingao, Hainan. In the statement on social networks they explained that the wind turbine has been tested in “extreme and abnormal” conditions so that the models meet the high standards.
For their part, different media outlets have pointed out the images to the MySE18.X prototype installed in August, where you can see how the blades fall while it was still rotating. The company neither confirms nor denies this fact.
Withstand typhoons. The Chinese company’s line of research into wind turbines is focused on resistance against typhoons. In fact, the MySE18.X model was promoted with the image that it could withstand the fury of typhoons and strong winds of 79.8 m/s. Additionally, a month after being installed it survived Super Typhoon Yagi, which devastated a nearby wind farm in Hainan.
The largest wind turbine. On August 28 in Hainan, the MySE18.X marine turbine was installed with a modular and lightweight design with a flexible power of up to 20 MW and a wind rotor diameter of 260 to 292 meters. The company itself has confirmed that at an average wind speed of 8.5 m/s, the wind turbine can generate 80 million kWh per year. However, this is still a prototype and has not yet been commercialized.
It’s not the biggest. The company itself announced the 22 MW MySE with a 310 m rotor equipped with carbon fiber blades. However, the competition between different Chinese companies is very great and the Dongfang Electric Corporation company far exceeded expectations by installing a 26MW offshore wind turbine, managing to withstand category 17 typhoons.
China lives with voracious competition at the national level for the construction of renewable infrastructure and the bigger the better. However, the consequence of this could be these fatal accidents where, fortunately, no major seriousness has been reported.
