Intel today released libva 2.23 as the newest feature release for this Video Acceleration API “VA-API” reference library implementation. Most significant with libva 2.23 is adding AV1 Profile 2 support.

The libva 2.23 release brings AV1 Profile 2 support to this VA-API library. AV1 Profile 2 is the “Professional Profile” that supports 4:2:2 chroma subsampling and 12-bit color depth compared to the Main (0) or High (1) profiles.

It was AMD that contributed VAProfileAV1Profile2 to this libva library as they are working on adding 12-bit AV1 decoding to FFmpeg and Mesa. AMD sent out the support and got the patches merged last year alas libva 2.22 as the prior release was out in July 2024 with this being the first release since that version.

The libva 2.23 release also adds VAProfileH264High422 for supporting 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC decoding.
