iPhone 17 Pro Leak Hints at Three Major Camera Upgrades

Apple is gearing up for the launch of the latest iPhone series, and a tipster familiar with the preparations has leaked some sensational details about the iPhone 17 Pro cameras.

As per the anonymous tip received by MacRumors, the iPhone 17 Pro’s telephoto lens would support 8x optical zoom, a major upgrade over the iPhone 16 Pro’s 5x optical zoom. In simple terms, higher optical zoom would let you capture distant subjects more clearly and with greater detail. Additionally, the lens is said to be movable, meaning it would allow continuous optical zoom at various focal lengths.

The tipster also claimed Apple is working on a new pro-level camera app for both photos and videos. While it is unclear if the rumored app is an upgrade to the existing Final Cut Camera app or a brand new offering, the tipster said it would compete with the likes of Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro. There’s also a chance that the app would be supported by all devices in the iPhone 17 lineup.

Another interesting claim made by the tipster is the addition of yet another Camera Control button. While the iPhone 16’s Camera Control key sits at the lower right edge of the phone and helps you launch the camera, take photos, and adjust zoom, the new one would be placed at the top edge and allow you to quickly access camera and related settings, the tipster said.

According to MacRumors, the tipster has identified themselves as someone working on an iPhone 17 Pro commercial. They work for a film company that has Apple listed as a client.

Despite that, as 9to5Mac notes, some of the claims seem a bit far-fetched. While an iPhone’s internal hardware often gets leaked well in advance, external changes, such as the addition of a physical button, are typically leaked by case manufacturers. Since we’re hearing about both these additions for the first time, the chances of them appearing in the final build are slim. The rumored software upgrade, which is a new pro camera app, seems more likely in comparison.

Additionally, however, the tipster has seconded a couple of rumors reported previously. One is the orange or copper-ish color for the iPhone 17 Pro, and the other is the repositioning of the Apple logo to the center of the back chassis.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 in the second week of September. To keep up with the latest leaks, check out our iPhone 17 rumor round-up.
