iPhone USB-C port could get much more useful in iOS 19

Apple is planning an iOS 19 change to enable the iPhone to connect to external displays via the device’s USB-C connector, which would launch a new interface similar to the Stage Manager tools already available on iPad.

While Apple already enables external displays through the USB-C port, it only mirrors the iPhone’s display rather than extends it. The same goes for AirPlay on iPhone, Apple’s wireless connectivity standard.

That’ll change within iOS 19 according to a source speaking to Majin Bu, who often publishes Apple rumours and perspective leaks on his website.

He writes that while the next version of Stage Manager for iPad will improve several aspects of the feature “iOS 19 isn’t being left behind”.

He adds (via 9to5Mac): “Source say[s] that iPhones with USB-C will support external displays, offering a Stage Manager like interface. While not a full desktop mode, it will allow users to extend their screen space, great for presentations, editing, or enhanced viewing.”

“There may be some limitations possibly in resolution or the number of apps displayed at once but the potential is promising.”

Whether this feature is reserved for the best iPhones remains to be seen, but it’ll at least require a model with a USB-C out.

The solution would be handy for users who need to connect to an external display for the purposes described above, but if the feature comes to fruition, the interface would be interesting.

On Stage Manager for Mac and iPad, Apple enables certain apps to take centre stage with windows from other apps you’re using handily placed off to the side. You can also more easily move or resize app windows to suit your workflow.

It also enables content to be dragged between Mac and iPad, or content to be edited on one device and quickly moved to the other. It’s particularly useful for iPad owners that like to use Apple Pencil to create or annotate.

Opinion

This is a small but significant change in the making.

It would be great for iPhone owners to benefit from that extra real estate to display while controlling the apps on their phone and shifting them into prominence on the large screens.

As the source said, it could be game changing for presentations, enabling users to only carry their iPhones.
