Xbox looks set to unveil a new controller this year that could introduce WiFi connectivity, a move that could help reduce latency issues often cited by cloud gamers.

According to The Verge, the new controller could be part of Microsoft’s push to grow its Xbox Cloud Gaming user base. The new controller reportedly connects directly to the Cloud, which could reduce latency by connecting directly to the game rather than to a console or other device. The current batch of Xbox controllers only connects to devices with Bluetooth or USB-C. Microsoft is reportedly also close to launching an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, which could draw in a wider pool of mobile gamers. There are also rumblings of a new Elite Controller 3, which has a rumored 2026 release date.

If the rumors are true, the new Xbox controller could debut as soon as the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. The showcase will feature previews of some of Xbox’s biggest first-party titles, including a Direct focused on the upcoming prequel “Gears of War: E-Day”.

The 2023 Sebile controller leak

A new controller has been expected ever since one leaked during the Microsoft vs. FTC legal case. That controller, codename Sebile, would have featured haptic feedback, modular thumbsticks and a rechargeable battery. Current reporting does not mention any of these features for the 2026 model, so it’s unclear whether the rumors refer to a new model or a continuation of the Sebile.

In the leaked document, Microsoft planned to launch the Sebile controller in the fourth quarter of 2024, along with a cylindrical redesign of the Series X with upgraded hardware. Those plans clearly changed, as there was no Sebile announcement and the Xbox Series X update was smaller than expected, only consisting of a redesigned chip and upgraded cooling.

A lot has changed for Xbox since then, with Phil Spencer’s sudden retirement and the reveal of the next-generation Xbox, expected to launch in 2027. While the next Xbox is unlikely to make an appearance anytime soon, all eyes will be on whatever Microsoft presents as a potential glimpse into the future of Xbox.
