On Sept 16, JD.com founder and chairman Richard Liu said the company will unveil a new hotel development plan by the end of the year, expanding further into travel services after entering the food delivery market. Speaking at a user event, Liu said he recently met with executives of major hotel groups in Hong Kong and emphasized that JD does not want to push hotels into price wars but instead aims to lower costs through supply chain optimization. JD Travel, launched during the company’s June 18 shopping festival, has already offered hotels up to three years of zero commission under its “Hotel PLUS Membership” program and signed a strategic partnership with Jinjiang Hotels. Liu added that hotels working with JD on zero commission now source about 50% of their customers from the platform. [Yicai, in Chinese]
