The Jedec industrial organization has announced the launch of LPDDR6, New standard of computer memories which promises greater performance, capacity and security, while reduces latency and consumption.

Five years have passed since the Jedec launched DDR5 and DDR4 is still the most used memories standard. And it has to spend a lot of time from the creation of a standard until the massive deployment occurs. That is why the technological industry must advance and cover the needs that in recent times are related to the AI revolution. And more in a section as important as that of computer memories.

What is LPDDR6

LPDDR6, acronym for ‘Low Power Double Data Rate 6’is a rule aimed at Mobile/laptops And it will be implemented in a great diversity of sectors, from client computing to servers, through the automotive industry and the perimeter computing of artificial intelligence systems. The norm will replace the current LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X in the future, although as we said above it is common for several generations to live together. Jedec is pending the launch of DDR6, which is generally aimed at large desktop computers and work stations.

All new standards promise performance improvements and LPDDR6 is not an exception, with a brutal increase in the bandwidth that will reach the 14.400 Gbpscompared to 6,400 GBPS of LPDDR5 and 8,533 GBPS of LPDDR5X. To do this, the standard introduces a dual subcanal architecture, each with 12 data lines and four command/direction signals, designed to optimize channel performance and minimize physical space.

Another important section is that of energy. LPDDR6 uses a lower operational voltage to reduce dynamic energy consumption and incorporates functions such as DVFSL (dynamic voltage and frequency scaling for low power) to adjust the voltage during low frequency operations. The standard will have a special mode of dynamic efficiency, which will allow it to operate in a single subcanal for low -power states, which means notable improvements with respect to the LPDDR5 in terms of Energy efficiency.

To improve the securityLPDDR6 will display numerous functions such as the well -known ECC (correction of errors in the matrix) and others such as CA Parity + Mbist, Pract (row activation count) and goal extraction regions, which guarantees the integrity of the data, detects memory errors and various improvements in reliability.

Since Jedec is a widely recognized organization of standards and has active members of the most important companies in the world, we hope that the first solutions will be implemented quickly, approximately in one year. LPDDR6 is adopted quickly. It is expected that signatures such as Mediatek, Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix and Qualcomm Technologies are the first to adopt the new memory standard.

Jedec has also approved CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 in what will be the largest update of RAM in 25 years, but referred to the factors of form and not to the operating characteristics that will be defined by LPDDR6 and DDR6 that will also be launched in this 2025.
