Following yesterday’s MacBook Neo unveiling, Apple’s SVP of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, spoke to ABC News about the new product, AI, and speculation about him becoming Apple’s next CEO.

John Ternus on the MacBook Neo and Apple’s approach to AI

ABC News correspondent Elizabeth Schulze was able to interview John Ternus following the MacBook Neo reveal in New York City.

Here’s Ternus on the big opportunity MacBook Neo has:

We saw an opportunity here to really just reach a lot, a lot more people than we ever have before. It’s solid, it’s reliable, it’s durable. It’s all the things you want a Mac to be. And, yeah, that’s an amazing price point.

Why did it take so long for Apple to offer a Mac at such an affordable price? Schulze remarks that many people have wanted more affordable Apple products for a long time.

Ternus responds: “Sure. And I think that’s why: the bar is high. We didn’t want to do it until we could do it really, really well, and build a Mac that we were proud of.”

On the topic of AI, Ternus explained that the technology would continue getting more and more integrated across Apple’s products.

He also gave this explanation that seemingly represents Apple’s philosophy on AI:

I think Apple Intelligence is going to continue to grow, and it’ll just make things you do better and easier. And if we’re doing it right, you know, people won’t even really necessarily notice or think about it. They’ll just have a new feature that they start using more and more because they really like it.

Is John Ternus in line to become Apple’s next CEO?

ABC News’ Schulze also asked directly about speculation that Ternus is in line to become Apple’s next CEO.

Understandably, his answer didn’t reveal a lot. But it’s noteworthy nonetheless. It’s rare to get any sort of public statement from a senior Apple leader about CEO succession—much less the person rumored to be the next CEO.

Here’s the response Ternus gave when asked about CEO speculation.

“Well, the good news is, I love the job I have,” Ternus started. “I get to work with the most amazing people in the world, and on days like today when we’ve announced all these products, it is the best place to be.”
