BUFFALO Bills star quarterback Josh Allen opened up about the details of his viral interaction with a referee during Sunday’s NFL Wild Card round playoff game.
Allen’s Bills claimed the 31-7 win over the Denver Broncos at Highmark Stadium.
During the third quarter, Allen was visibly upset about a missed defensive pass interference call on Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
Buffalo had to settle for a field goal and the CBS broadcast later showed referee Bill Vinovich going over to the Bills bench and speaking with Allen.
The official had one hand on Allen’s shoulder and then the other on his chest.
NFL TV viewers were stunned at the sequence, with some even suspicious of what they believed to be a friendly conversation.
After the contest, Allen was asked about the discussion and revealed that Vinovich wanted the signal-caller to calm down with his criticism of the no-call.
“I wasn’t happy with what was going on and I was yelling a little bit, and he said, “Don’t be yelling.” So my bad. Sorry,” Allen told reporters.
The missed call wouldn’t affect the game that much, as Buffalo dominated Denver on both sides of the ball.
Allen completed 20-of-26 passes with 272 yards and two touchdown passes.
Running back James Cook posted 120 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Still, fans were enraged with the referee talking with Allen on the Bills bench – an instance that usually never takes place.
There were also social media users who claimed that Vinovich was apologizing to Allen.
“Personal apology from the ref to Josh Allen. I’ve seen it all man,” one wrote.
“The ref apologizing to Josh Allen on bench is just insane,” another said.
There were NFL fans who brought up Patrick Mahomes in the controversy.
