The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, and one Oscar nod in particular has sparked some heated conversations.
In the Best Actress category, Kate Hudson received her first nomination in 25 years for her role in the movie Song Sung Blue. The last time she was in competition for an Oscar was for her supporting role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s rock and roll movie, Almost Famous.
Song Sung Blue draws inspiration from the 2008 documentary of the same name about the singing duo Claire and Mike Sardina and from Lightning and Thunder, the Neil Diamond cover band they formed. Hudson plays Claire opposite Hugh Jackman’s Mike. The story follows the real-life married couple as they performed together throughout Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the ’80s and ’90s. Mike Sardina died of a head injury in 2006.

Hudson’s Oscar nomination is the only nod for Song Sung Blue. The actor also received a Golden Globe nomination, but the award went to Rose Byrne for the movie If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You. Byrne also received an Oscar nomination today in the Best Actress category, alongside Emma Stone for Bugonia, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value.
Perhaps surprisingly, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were not nominated for their roles in Wicked: For Good, despite both actors receiving Golden Globe nominations this year. And with One Battle After Another notching 13 total Oscar nods, it felt unexpected that Chase Infiniti got snubbed for a Best Actress nomination for playing Willa in the film.
Song Sung Blue is still playing in theaters but can be rented at home on Prime Video, Fandango and other video platforms.
Conan O’Brien returns as host of The Oscars, which will air live on Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and Hulu. Beginning in 2029, the award ceremony will air on YouTube.
