KING Charles is refusing to slow down despite aides admitting “we’ve all tried” and Camilla saying “he wants to do more and more and more”.

The couple are resting on their Balmoral estate in Scotland after a four-day state visit to Italy.

Charles had to cancel a string of events last month after being taken to hospital suffering effects from his cancer treatment.

But sources close to the King dismiss the health scare as a “blip” and say he will continue balancing regular cancer treatment with full-time work.

Charles and Camilla marked their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday with six engagements and an audience with the Pope.

Camilla last week laughed off suggestions that the best anniversary present would be her husband slowing down.

She said: “No, I think he loves his work and it keeps him going.

“And I think it’s wonderful, you know, if you’ve been ill and you are recovering, you’re getting better and now he wants to do more and more and more. That’s the problem.”

Asked if he will be advised to slow down due to his age and cancer treatment, a senior palace official said: “We’ve all tried! But as people will have seen, the King enjoys his work.”

After the Balmoral break, he will appear with Camilla in Durham for the Maundy Service and lead the royals on Easter Sunday at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

Inside Charles and Camilla’s relationship

CHARLES and Camilla’s relationship began back in 1971 when the pair were introduced by a mutual friend.

Aged 23, they quickly became close friends talking for hours on the phone and spending as much time together as possible.

However, the relationship never progressed amid warnings from Charles’ great-uncle Lord Mountbatten that Camilla was not “sufficiently aristocratic” to marry into the Royal Family.

The then-Prince of Wales tied the knot with Diana in 1981 upon his family’s recommendation – but the People’s Princess called the relationship “tricky” as she knew how much Charles loved Camilla.

She claimed that before her wedding, she found out Charles had a bracelet made with the initials “G” and “F” for Gladys and Fred – pet names Camilla and Charles had for each other.

She also found photos of Camilla in Charles’ diary on their honeymoon, as well as cufflinks with the initials “C” and “C” intertwined.

Five years on from their spectacular wedding, Charles and Diana’s marriage was lost – with Camilla firmly back in the picture.

Charles and Diana divorced in 1996, before her death in 1997.

King Charles II wed Camilla Parker-Bowles on April 9 2005, nearly eight years after his ex-wife and mother to his sons, Princess Diana, tragically died.
