While Alonso was spared the sack after that defeat, with rival Barcelona now enjoying a sizeable lead at the top of La Liga, another loss today would likely bring an early end to what will have been a painfully short spell at the Bernabéu.
The host, meanwhile, has 18 points from its opening 15 matches, with the Basque side still buzzing from last weekend’s 1-0 win at home to Real Sociedad — a result that pushed Eduardo Coudet’s team up to 11th in the table.
