The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) announced it had been gifted the country’s first fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks for law enforcement use.
During an address, LVMPD said an unnamed donor gifted the department at least 10 Cybertrucks to use for patrol and SWAT teams.
“By the way, we ordered these before the Trump Tower [explosion]” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said, according to the outlet Police1, referring to the New Year’s Day incident that killed the driver, who was identified as an active-duty Army solider, and injured several others.
“But I will tell you, we want these things because the cops inside will be safe no matter,” McMahill said. “These stop bullets. They are also a tremendous recruitment tool for us.”
He noted that the trucks were gifted from a “very generous” individual and would not impact the department’s budget.
News of the gift comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has emerged as a top ally and senior adviser to President Trump, assisted authorities earlier this year with their probe into the explosion outside of the president’s luxury hotel. The department lavished praise on the tech billionaire for his help at the time.
Musk replied Tuesday to the news about the updated fleet on social platform X — which he also owns along with at least five other companies — with an emoji wearing sunglasses.
